The
Waves - The Region - Surfguide
Tour - Lessons
The Basque Country is situated in Northern
Spain and stretches down from the border of France.
It has many world-class waves in the area, the most
famous being the epic Mundaka. A left-hander that breaks
on the sandbar of a perfect river mouth in a small coastal
fishing town, Mundaka is the jewel in the crown of Northern
Spain and sometimes overshadows the many other world-class
waves this area has to offer.
An inside view of Mundaka!
Mundaka is more fickle to conditions than
most people realise and usually only breaks when there
is a decent swell and it is low tide, whereas Sopelana
and Bakio are the most consistent places in the region
for surf every day. The locals here can be protective
of their waves, so having inside info and a connection
with our surf guides works an absolute treat!

A view of Mundaka from the hill top. Hard

The waves of Sopelana and Bakio are only
15 minutes from the airport in Bilbao. This is a great
base for your stay in the Basque Country. Our guides
know all the local wind and swell conditions, so will
always have you in the right spot at the right time.
Menakos is a big wave spot in Sopelana, this wave pictured
above will challenge even the most experienced surfer.
It has a very steep drop, with and full bowl section
that will hold up to 15 ft. This wave is very similar
in shape to Haleiwa and has just as much power.
In contrast to Menakos the beach breaks
of Sopelana are usually gentle breaking waves that suit
beginners through to advanced surfers. It is the most
consistent and surfed wave in the area especially on
the weekends.
The best time of year for consistent solid surf is August
to October, however there are definitely waves to be
had all year round here. If you want to surf moderate
water temperatures then you should plan you trip between
April and September. The best boards to bring would
be your short boards and medium-sized guns for Mundaka
and Menakoz. There are some big wave spots in the region
so if you’re that way inclined make sure you bring
your big boards with you!

Sopelana can really turn it on for
locals and tourists alike

Menakos is a real wave and it will
challenge anyone!

The summer time here is the time to come
if you want to party! With live bands, street performers,
fireworks and pumping bars and clubs, you’ll be
blown away by how the Spanish can party.

If however, you are more interested in
surfing early and sampling the great food and wine of
the area, you won’t be disappointed. Although
part of Spain, the Basque Country is hardly Spanish
at all with its own language, culture and cuisine. All
of our trips are catered exactly to your needs and what
you want to get out of your trip.

The Guggenheim museum in Bilbao is
stunning
The city of Bilbao is well worth a visit on a non-surfing
afternoon. The shopping is great and there are loads
of must-see tourist attractions. Slightly further down
the coast San Sebastian is also worth a look in with
amazing restaurants, Pintxos (tapas) bars and some stunning
buildings in the old town.
